How Did You Get Started?

I discovered bodybuilding by chance and very late in my life... After I had quit rugby, I felt the need to exercise. A friend of mine had just subscribed a gym membership.

He asked me to go there with him and I did. I didn't quite like the idea to go to a gym. However that was my first time in a gym. I was 33 years old. My weight was 85 kilos (187 lbs.) and my height was 183 cm ( 6 feet). Believe me, I have never been really skinny.

I must admit I was not very much impressed by the gym. I thought it was stupid to struggle with a barbell and two 10-kilo ( 22 lbs .) plates on the sides. I am honest. I kept on for several months. Eventually, I bought a gym-set to work out in my basement.

Lonesome and in my basement - that was the very starting of my career as a bodybuilder. I had no knowledge. I didn't read bodybuilding magazines. I had been training insanely for three years. I had not been following any special training program. My only goal was to acquire a noticeable size.

Later on I started to read bodybuilding magazines and got interested into any bodybuilding champion. I subscribed to a brand new gym in Dijon. It was the Athletic Gym and the owner was Jacky Biondi. The ambiance and the people were wonderful. There I started to work out hard and to diet properly.

One year later, Jacky began to talk me into entering for a regional competition. The idea had never crossed my mind before that day! He pressured me so much that he got me persuaded. So I got it started!

Thanks to his advice I won my first competition at Macon in 1994. I was 37 years old! My height was always 183 cm ( 6 feet ) but now my weight was 83 kilos (183 lbs)! Today I can barely realize what I was able to do and the results I got...

  • 1993 - Debut in the FFCPAS/WABBA category

  • 1993 - Champion of Bourgogne in the Light Heavyweight class at 183 Pounds

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

Off-season I work out each muscle once a week. My training is based on a four-day-per-week schedule. I will add one more day when I need it. I work out on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday are days off. My weekly exercise plan:

As you can see, my training program is not revolutionary. I believe that all year round cardio is extremely important to stay fit. I usually do 3-5 exercises by body part with 6-15 reps. It is always a matter of feeling. Off-season I train relatively heavy with low reps.

Sometimes I will go for higher reps. When I am on a diet before competition, I try not to reduce the amount of weight for an exercise. I will take shorter rest periods between sets.

From time to time, I will use lighter weights and train to failure. I will also do more cardio workouts. Off-season my weight goes between 100 and 115 kg . I went to a maximum of 125 kg once, without conclusive results. Pre-contest: between 98 and 100 kg.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I have balanced nutrition habits all-year round. Off-season I usually take more carbohydrates. Here is my nutrition plan: rice, pasta, fruits, white meat, fat-free red meat, fish (a lot of tuna), skimmed milk, fat-free white cheese, colza or olive oil. I also drink up to 3- 4 litres of water daily, more before competition. My daily protein intake is 250-350 gr.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

My supplements are Proteins, BCAA, Creatine, Glutamine, Vitamins & Minerals, Antioxidants, and Omega 3 & 6.

There is not in particular a supplement, but rather a set of supplements allies always has a food controlled, I think that all supplements have their importance and that nothing must be disregarded. I am looking for a sponsor, I have not a specific products Sponsor at the moment.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I always made a lot of sport, but the bodybuilding brought me a real feeling of fullness... to really feel in his/her/its head and in his/her/its body that to want besides.... the pleasure also to challenge the time that passes, the years that the other take for a fatality, whereas it is not anything of it... one can have the limits moved back always... with will!

I would like to be an example for the other... a source of incentive for all those that say themselves, "Is it too late for me? Am I too old?"

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I was WPF Vice-Mr Universe (runner-up) in 2002 and 3rd in 2005. 2006 is the year to become Mr. Universe! I never had a sponsor or a trainer and I still got these results... I always did just fine by myself! I would love to find a sponsor because I know that the title is in my hands with their help...

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Advice to young bodybuilders: Be patient and perseverant... without work and sacrifice you can't do anything!
